Welcome to the Rooftop ARTchives Blog.

Once upon a time in 2009, a mysterious box landed on the doorstop of the Rooftop art room. The box was packed with old photos, receipts, reports and other correspondence, press books and video tapes. So began this adventure in documenting the history of the arts at Rooftop Alternative PreK-8 School.

It has taken many years for the necessary technology to evolve, but good things come to those who wait. Thanks to a generous grant from the Internet Archive, this special archiving project is the next step forward for The Rooftop History Project begun in 2011. With The Rooftop ARTchives, we “open the door” and establishing a welcoming place to come face to face with the past, in hopes of a sense of connection to a place that has inspired thousands of stories and an awe-inspiring amount of student work. It is our deepest wish that deep study of the Rooftop ARTchives will help future generations to appreciate and learn from the trailblazers and the artists who worked together to create a school community ready, willing and eager to take a journey with the arts.

Archive-It!

This 2016-2017 school year, Rooftop School students are participating in the Internet Archives’ K12 Archiving Program, which provides an opportunity for students to select and save websites for future generations (historians, scholars, their descendants, the general public) to look at 50,100, 500 years from now. The program was originally developed in collaboration with the Library of Congress Digital Preservation program

The Rooftop ARTchives at The Internet Archive

The Archive/Opera class at Rooftop’s Studio at Mayeda gives students the opportunity create both the “archives” (from Greek ta arkheia public records, and the “opera,” (literally meaning “the work”). As we explore the school’s history, we make decisions about what we would like to archive and come together to create new works of art in the process.
